It Was the Worst of Times, It Was the Worst of Times

By December 30, 2023Commentary

There is almost nothing good to say about world or national or local events in 2023.  Nothing.  Locally, the woke morons who control Minnesota ran amok with a massive spending increase that will bankrupt the state within a few years and does nothing to stop the flight of our most productive residents to lower tax, more rational states.  Among the many other lunacies enacted are policies to ensure that education in the state continues its rapid decline, unless you consider political indoctrination education.  Crime is out of control, infrastructure decaying, the economy, other than the government sector, shrinking, but the Dems and their media arm, the Star Tribune, think everything is just hunky-dory.

Nationally, the Bidementia administration ran up our deficit by another $2 trillion plus and interest rates soared in response.  Most people, somewhat understandably given the state of our education system, are blissfully unaware of the dangers of the pile of debt we have accumulated and the impact of that debt on annual federal spending.  Much of the spending is wasted on frivolous items like renewable energy or paid out to slackers as vote-buying money in the form of government freebies.  Sooner rather than later this will all come crashing down.  The Dem party is now officially the party of totalitarianism–you can’t run for office unless they say so, if they don’t like your politics they will find some pretext to prosecute you criminally, you must think, say and act exactly as they wish or you will be pilloried in their bought-off media arms, including social media and you may lose your job, your friends, your social connections.  We are past the tipping point of being finished as a society that actually makes people’s lives better.

And internationally, more than ever, the basic barbarity of much of humanity was revealed, with only the meagerest of responses from the supposedly civilized West.  Russia continues its delusional war in Ukraine, I don’t even want to think about what happened in Israel and China essentially genocided the Uighurs, while Apple and other US companies said nothing for fear of losing money in the country.  When will we learn that the only response to evil is to wipe out those who commit it.  And I mean wipe out.  They are irredeemable, they are not humans in any sense that we want to humanity to represent.  But who has the courage of Churchill or Roosevelt today, to see that plainly and act accordingly?  No one I can see.

So while I wish you all a Happy New Year, I don’t think it will be anything but a continuation of the depressing, sordid affair that 2023 was.

And…the deterioration of sports (the alternative to escape the reality of social disintegration) has been accelerating in 2023.

Take golf for example, it was bad enough in 2022 when the Saudi Arabia-financed LIV tour siphoned off talent into a competing tour. Then, in 2024 the 3 major golf tours look to become combined under Saudi control. So, in the future we’ll be having just 3 major “old school” golf events (Masters, US Open, British Open) retaining their current format. The rest of pro golf becomes exhibitions of top players guaranteed $M+ payouts with yearly contracts, bonuses, appearance money……just like other sports. End of pro golf as we know it. Pros like DeChambeau and Rahm can sign onto LIV for $200M+, then be interviewed by the Brett Baer and claim it’s not for the $$$$, but to advance the sport of tournament golf to the next level……make it more “fan friendly”…..like the 16th hole at the Phoenix (Waste Management) Open surrounded by grandstands filled with screaming drunks and playing loud music. That is where golf is headed.

Then, there is football. You can see the NFL is slowly moving games to $$ subscription apps like Amazon Prime and Peacock (NBC), or you’ll need a subscription to YouTube (Google) for $450/yr to see many games. Plus, there are the ridiculous salaries paid, like a typical top QB has a 5-yr contract in the $250M range…mostly guaranteed. Except for a few top teams, the overall quality of play is going downhill. There is endless hype. The info sports programming (ESPN) is unwatchable (talking heads) as are cable news shows, especially FOX. Only about 25% of NFL games are truly competitive. Any key play is replayed over and over….maybe 20 times in the course of a game. The announcing is often poor and exaggerated…….where have you gone John Madden and Pat Summerall? In every game…each team….has several players that are claimed to the “best in the league”…and on the next play they fumble the ball or cause a penalty.

Then, there is the sad case of college football. The cost of these programs to public universities is enormous, and financed by borrowing. See: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/breaking-down-spending-at-one-of-americas-priciest-public-colleges-2d74ec48?mod=education_news_article_pos4
…..Top head coaches make $5M+/yr. Back in the day, freshman could not play until they showed some academic achievement, so a typical top college player was limited to 3-yrs and typically did not switch schools. Now, college football players (and other sports) play right away, and can switch schools easily by entering a so-called “transfer portal”, so many top college players have careers at 2-3 different schools. Then, there are “red shirt” players who can can extend their eligibility for 5-6 years, and some players continue even after “graduation.” Players intending to turn pro will quit after the final regular season game, so are absent for their school’s bowl game. Ohio State was without their best QB (“transfer portal”) and star WR (“turning pro”) for yesterday’s bowl game, so they were very limited on offense and were defeated by a weaker team (14-3). So, this is the crap they expect fans to sit thru for 3.5+ hours with endless pizza and State Farm ads? Lots of Pfizer-sponsored vaccine ads, too.

How about a trivalent mRNA vaccine vs. RSV, Covid, and influenza? Coming in 2024? Hopefully it will be “safety tested” in Wuhan first.

Spent the New Year weekend in SD visiting the grandkids so didn’t see any news-a nice break. Watched a few bowl games. Some were the exciting and cheered heartily. Catching up now.
