The Society for Participatory Medicine

By October 21, 2009November 2nd, 2009Commentary

There has been a lot of work on patient engagement in management of health and health care over the last few years.  Many studies have demonstrated that patient involvement in decision-making about care often leads to lower resource utilization and spending and higher patient satisfaction.  Technological advances such as extensive use of wideband internet connections, telehealth and mobile health facilitate patient awareness and interaction with providers.  The Society for Participatory Medicine examines and advocates on issues relating to patient engagement and will begin publishing a journal on the topic.  (Web Page) The journal should be a useful aid to understanding the true benefits and costs of a more patient-centered health system.
