Minnesota Spending and Taxes

By October 22, 2026Commentary2 min read

More excellent work from the Center for the American Experiment as they put a number to the pie-in-the-sky social programs tossed around by the Minnesota Dems, who have already spent and taxed the state into financial oblivion.  Over the last four years, Dems have doubled the state budget, with most of the increase going to fraud and waste.  Dems want to expand Medicaid, provide free child care, provide heat and energy to all homes, and more, all of which would cost the state a mere $13.5 billion on top of an already bloated budget.  (JP Substack)

Unlike the federal government, the state can’t just borrow endlessly to finance its reckless spending, so it must raise taxes.  But here is the painful truth for Minnesotans, especially working families.  Minnesota has incredibly high income taxes already and it has very high sales taxes, gas taxes, property taxes, car tab fees and so on.  We have the second highest rate of income tax in the country, and that rate kicks in at a very low level–just over $200,000 of income.  California has the highest rate, but it doesn’t start til one million dollars of income.  That high rate hits young working couples very hard.  Minnesota also has one of the highest tax rates on business and that high rate is on the first dollar of income.  Our total tax burden on individuals and businesses is insane and explains why working people are leaving the state and being replaced by freeloaders and fraudsters.   (JP Substack)
