Lifetime Taxes by State

By September 2, 2026Commentary2 min read

This is kind of the counterpart post to the recent one on how much income it takes to live comfortably in a state.  I keep saying that the biggest affordability issue is the cost of government, which has soared in many states–taxes and fees of all kinds are exploding.  So at the Visual Capitalist they put together a chart of how much a single filer would pay in lifetime taxes in a state.  Minnesota is way up there as you might imagine.  New Jersey leads the list at over $1,350,000.  It is followed by Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, California, and Minnesota weighs in at ninth, over $1,018,000 in lifetime taxes.  Obviously the number would be much higher for a working couple or family.

The lowest states are Florida, $508,000, with South Dakota, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Nevada also down there.  You will once again note that all the high tax states are Dem run and all the low-tax ones are Rep run.  Taxes are the single biggest expenses for any person or family, so the tax burden correlates perfectly with the affordability of a state.  And once again we see that contrary to Little Timmy Walz’ lies, Minnesota is a very unaffordable state.   (VC Post)
