Cognitive Decline and Gut Function

If you read enough research and peruse scientific journals, you will run across all kinds of interesting stuff.  Of course, these days there is always a question about whether it is real research.  This one was fascinating to me.  The human body is very complex and our brain function may be the most complex aspect of our bodies.  As we get older our brains tend to decline in capabilities, including decreasing memory functionality.  I did not realize this before reading the article, but apparently there are strong links between intestinal activities and brain function.  The study details a pathway whereby certain bacteria can interfere with the chemical signaling between gut and brain, leading to the memory function decline.  The scientists further describe certain interventions to restore that functioning.  Warning–expensive new drugs coming.  But it is another example of how we still have so much to learn about our bodies and maintaining health.  (Nature Study)
