What!! DEI May Actually Exacerbate Divisions and Prevent Unity

By November 27, 2024Commentary

Gosh, the things that just upset my understanding of the world.  Here I was sure that focussing on calling some people racist and others oppressed and celebrating 894 genders would make the world a better place.  And now some fools do research that shows that just may not be true!!  What is the world coming to.  Anyway, this research has gotten some notoriety and now is being suppressed by some of its initial promoters.  It finds, as you would expect, that heightening the importance of immutable characteristics like sex, skin color and ethnic background tends to make people more tribal and more hostile toward groups that are portrayed negatively or just when the existence of such differences are highlighted.  The research focused on the typical anti-racist, oppressor/oppressed bullshit spread in universities and then elsewhere out into business.  This particular garbage is itself deeply stereotyping and racist.  So I don’t know why anyone is surprised that it has negative effects.  Partly out of fear of losing customers, but possibly also because they are realizing that they don’t make things better, companies are increasingly dropping DEI programs, with Walmart being the most recent example.

Our economy will function best when knowledge, skills and experience are the primary basis for hiring and promotion decisions and when every person has a full opportunity to develop that knowledge and experience and those skills.  That may mean providing extra assistance to those, without regard to race, ethnic background, sex or other characteristics, are disadvantaged in some way in maximizing that opportunity.  I am fine with that, indeed I think it helps us all.  But use of those factors for actual employment related or other decisions is wrong, unfair, and morally indefensible.   (DEI Research)
