One Last Word on Gaetz

By November 22, 2024Commentary

I think Bondi is an outstanding pick, should have gone that way in the first place.  The conspiracy part of me wonders what really happened here.  Speaker Johnson and Trump have become pretty close.  Could it be that this was all cooked up as a way to get Gaetz out of the House and remove a nettle to smooth functioning of the House when there is such a slim majority?  Did Johnson say to Trump, why don’t you nominate Gaetz, he will resign from the House to avoid the ethics report being released, but he won’t be approved?  Just the quickness with which Trump had the backup pick ready to go and the fact that I don’t believe Gaetz would have withdrawn without pressure from Trump have me speculating on just how devious a plot may have been created here.

Or perhaps President Trump nominated Gaetz just to see which Republicans in the Senate would oppose him. Now he knows who is his opposition.

  • Jim Edholm says:

I agree with your speculation. Gaetz was a thorn in leadership’s side, and I think this was a ploy to get him out of there. However, the speed with which he was replaced would probably be duplicated in the event of any nominee being dumped – Trump’s team has said that they had a whole list of alternatives in the event of Dem dirty tactics taking any one of them down. I agree on Bondi as a superb choice

  • William Viergever says:

But didn’t he resign from his current term, not the one one he was just re-elected to?

    • Kevin Roche says:

yeah, I am trying to get a straight answer to that. Current thinking seems to be he wants out of Congress and will run for Gov of Florida. He is not saying he will go to Congress next year, although he was re-elected, and DeSantis is planning a fast special election. If he is worried about the ethics thing, he won’t go back to Congress.

    • William Viergever says:

I forgot about running for the FL Governor. Switching subjects, any take on who DeSantis might slot for Rubio’s seat?

  • Jersey JoePa says:

Very intuitive and it all hangs together nicely. Totally agree on Bondi as being a solid choice. She is more than qualified and at some level, the selection stymies the liberal media that sees everything through age, race and gender.

One suggestion is that the Rubio replacement will be Matt Gaetz. Get him out of the house and into the senate where the RINOs and swampers need some “reformation”. I think that is a long shot though. It would require 4D chess and the republicans can barely play checkers.

    • Kevin Roche says:

no, Desantis doesn’t like Gaetz and now Gaetz says he is out of Congress, not sure what he will do

    • William W Viergever says:

Bondi can always make Matt a Special Prosecutor 🙂

    • Kevin Roche says:

don’t think she likes him either

“Could it be that this was all cooked up as a way to get Gaetz out of the House and remove a nettle to smooth functioning of the House when there is such a slim majority?”

I think not. As I understand it, he is still free to take his seat on Jan. 3. That might be why DeSantis has not yet called a special election; it is moot unless Gaetz also resigns from the term to which he was just elected.

The theory that this gives Gaetz cover for leaving Congress makes more sense. Especially if he is planning a run for governor.

    • Kevin Roche says:

okay, he has now said he isn’t returning to Congress, which I assume is driven by 1) avoiding the formal release of the ethics report and 2) a desire to run for Governor in 2026

  • KKB says:

Good point. There os always something more tactical afoot then what we are ever told.
