One of the biggest lies told by the climate hysterics is that all the ice in the world is melting as a result of global warming. Al Gore has famously proclaimed that the Arctic would have no ice in summer in 2013, oh wait, we are ten years past that and there is still ice. I think his current prediction is no ice by the year 5682. You get the drift. Similar nonsense is spouted about Greenland, which actually has experienced net ice mass growth over recent years–yes some ice melts but it keeps snowing, and the snow keeps compacting and turning into ice and in some places feeding glaciers and flowing to the sea, where some of it melts.
And then there is Antarctica, the largest reservoir of ice in the world, which keeps messing with the hysterics’ minds by also refusing to melt. While hysterics focus on some typical and cyclical ice loss on the Antarctica peninsula, the rest of the continent is gaining ice. This paper is a detailed examination of trends in Antarctic ice extent and mass since the late 1970s. The primary item to note is that Antarctica’s ice undergoes frequent and often sudden swings in volume and extent, sometimes up, sometimes down. The overall trend in this period has been an increase. Pinning down the exact explanation for any of these changes is difficult, as you might imagine. The major factor appears to be an association with certain current and temperature changes in the Pacific Ocean. And contrary to hysterics’ desires, it seems this is natural variability. (Cryo. ‘Greenland, which actually has experienced net ice mass growth over recent years–yes some ice melts but it keeps snowing’
However, when I was in high school, I was taught that warmer temperatures, lead to more precipitation (snow) which would expand the ice caps. Which to a point, makes sense.
yes, it seems those who pimp global warming will have a way to attribute everything to warming. It is likely true that warmer air holds more moisture and that if temperature averages say 25 degrees versus 10 degrees somewhere, you will likely have more snow all things being equal, but the underlying point is that the ice isn’t net melting, which somehow gets ignored by the hysterics
Worth noting that most of the melting occurs in the west Antarctic peninsula where there is geothermal activity
