The reactions to the election results are pretty predictable. A lot of Dems are shocked and sullen. Many are angry and tearful. The few who attempt to engage in any self-examination about what went wrong–wrong from their perspective–tend to blame Americans who voted for Trump, describing them as racist, sexist, homophobic, stupid and other worse adjectives, or say that Dems, despite completely owning the traditional media, just aren’t getting the message across about how wonderful their policies are for the citizenry. I celebrate this mass delusion and encourage its continuation. The longer it goes on, the more elections Reps will win. So please, don’t encourage Dems to suddenly become more rational, not that there is any real risk of that.
On the Rep side, people are obviously happy, and also surprised by the depth of the win. Some are inclined to gloating and enjoying the despair of especially the whacked pro(re)gressive wing of the Dem party, which really is about the entire party at this point. Some are urging empathy and compassion and reaching out a hand of unity. I am tempted to applaud these efforts at ending our damaging division. But as usual, reality intrudes. The division is largely caused by these whackos, whose extreme identity politics, authoritarian suppression of anyone who dares oppose them and attempted indoctrination of children and college students have led us to where we find ourselves.
I will be really honest. I have no desire to get along with this group. They have zero interest in understanding my positions and issues, they would be happy to completely censor my views, and their version of “bipartisanship” or unity is that we all agree to go along with their lunacy. So why would I have any interest in trying to come to a rational compromise with them? It isn’t possible. I would like the tone of the discussion to be more civil. But conservatives aren’t the group rioting in the streets, destroying buildings, cars and everything else or assaulting anyone they believe doesn’t agree with them. This was started by the Dems and they will have to live with the consequences of that unless and until they make a sincere apology and demonstrate a sincere and lasting change in behavior.
100% Agree!
This is why I like smart people; you put into coherent words, the things I’m thinking and feeling. Thank you – you’ve captured the current social environment perfectly.
