You Can’t Trust Scientists

By June 8, 2021Commentary

The sudden reversal of opinion on whether or not CV-19 might have been created in and escaped from a Chinese lab should be a stark warning to us that at least in the US, you can’t trust scientists, as they have become political and ideological tools, all too willingly in most cases.  Science is a process, a search for understanding of how the world works.  It never assumes the final answer has been found, it is always open to new hypotheses and new data.  A good scientist would above all else be scrupulous in understanding human cognitive and emotional biases and extremely self-aware about how those biases may affect their own work.  They would avoid any political or ideological or other involvement which may raise suspicions about the quality of their work.  Scientists should insist on replication of results before research findings are acted upon, as a check upon the conscious or unconscious impact of biases.

Instead, today we have so-called scientists who openly parade and brag about their ideological orientation and who openly suggest that research should be slanted to produce results that support policies they believe in.  We see this in every field of science, particularly any social science, medicine and climate research.  So we really can’t be surprised that supposed infectious disease and other experts who hated the last President refused to take seriously the possibility that CV-19 was human created and treated the assertion that it might have been as racism and xenophobia.  I don’t know if it was or wasn’t, but we do know that China will never be truthful and forthcoming about where CV-19 came from.

We depend on scientists to develop knowledge that improves our lives.  We can’t trust today’s scientists at all.  They have no ethics.  The solution is laws that mandate that any person entering a scientific profession take courses and yearly training throughout their careers on cognitive and emotional biases and the necessity of avoiding any activity that might prejudice research outcomes.  No research should be used for any policy or government action purpose unless the researchers have completely disclosed all activities and affiliations that might affect the neutrality of their work.  Any research used for such policy or government action must be replicated.  And peer review of research needs to be completely overhauled and made more transparent.  Today it has become just another tool to force ideological conformity and rigidity among scientists.

I have enjoyed and revered science my entire life; its perversion is a devastating tragedy which should be rectified as soon as possible.  In the meantime, unfortunately you can’t trust scientists or science.

I agree with most of your comments but I don’t see the origin of COVID having much to do with the way we reacted, except maybe in the attitude of some folks to various precautionary measures. I think the bigger takeaway from the ‘gain of function’/US funding of WIV debacle is that we have to stop thinking that all potential scientific reasearch is a good thing, and start exercising real control over projects that have significant risks. That’s also going to be downstream from the de-pollicization of science.

Galileo had a lot of political fallout with his theory on earth daily rotating and resolving around the sun. I believe the Catholic church even got involved along with other “scientists.” Some things never change…. we just see more of it and sooner with social media.

they are practicing “Opience” … opinion dressed up as science …

I am probably one of your least-educated followers but I don’t need a degree to see through “climate science” when it’s main remedy is to highly tax and regulate American commerce while giving other industrial countries a pass. The same is true for the handling of the covid scare; “These businesses are open, select businesses are closed under penalty of law. No funeral for your loved ones but we will virtue-signal by packing a Church for George Floyd.” Science, as I understand it, is never settled but should remain open to, and apply, new information. The heavy censorship of dissenting opinions exposes the real motive behind the headlines.

the refusal of the “doctors” in charge to consider alternative treatments killed tens of thousands of people … maybe alot more …

So all those BLM lawn signs around Linden Hills and Macalester admonishing us “Science is real.” are wrong?

Laws will only make the problem worse, not better.

Great post. I live in the Northeast however have spent two months this year in Florida. What worries me more that politicized science is how residents, even vaccinated, here are still afraid, wear masks and truly believe the Governors of NY,MA,NJ,RI successfully beat COVID and the FL,TX,SD,GA Governors were disasters, lied about stats, and bodies are piled up in secret locations because lockdowns obviously work better than opening up states and letting residents get back to their lives. People are wearing masks “because it’s the right thing to do”. Solution? Well, I’m heading back to Florida for the month of September to hang with people living life.

Btw, you’ve kept a lot of people like me sane through the government and experts insane responses to Covid. Thanks.

It’s all about the funding sources for ‘scientific endeavors’. When you follow the money trail regarding who got funding/grants, you also see why these ‘scientists’ are adjusting their results to keep the dollars flowing, up to and including GOF research in Wohan. You can train these people until the sun revolves around the Earth, but it won’t change the problem. Corruption is corruption … crony capitalism is now running the country at the highest levels of the government and the swamp is spilling over into new arenas.

There needs to be a consolidated blog created (matix) tlisting every member of all branches of the government from the state legislators/judiciary up to the POTUS with clear voting and position status on key issues over the last 3 years. Then a list of candidates and their positions so we know who’s got to go and who’s on deck. This should be an immediate task of the RNC !! A complete flush of the corrupts cowards who’ve led us down into this sewer needs to happen.

Twas always true but science was not as revered as now. The expansion of federal funding to a huge chunk of scientific endeavor and the need to get it every year is the biggest driver. I worked with a guy years ago that used to work on Fast Breeder Nuclear Reactors at Oak Ridge National Lab. He joked about how they could always secure funding via the “threat of the month club”. You postulated a risk, got a grant to study it, proved it wasn’t a big deal after all. Plug in Climate Change, COVID-XX, or any new issue and you will find the same pattern. Without the overwhelming threat such as losing WWII, managing these grants is always political.

I agree it’s a big problem but who should we trust instead? The church? Politicians? Our gut instinct? I’d go with flawed scientists before any of those options.

  • David says:

“We can’t trust today’s scientists at all.” – hopefully you take your own advice here with respect to vaccines . . . 😉

As a side topic, I would appreciate your thoughts on Dr Peter McCullough’s interview:

I completely agree. Dennis Prager frequently reminds listeners to his show that the left ruins everything it touches. It has ruined education, science and medicine, to name a few. That’s not to say that there aren’t good teachers, scientists and doctors, but simply that those institutions have become corrupt and political.

Much of what he described was documented on Peak Prosperity months ago. Healthy Skeptic has / had numerous studies.

The doc noted some studies and some fakenews.

The video also explains why widespread immunity, community immunity or ‘herd’ immunity was, and is not, seldom discussed by those in power or the media. He could have gone into more detail.

It seems to me that Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Google played a role. Who are we not seeing?

He mentions that natural immunity is the best immunity and those with it do not need a vaccine. But then he had a solid case of CV-19 and still wanted to get the shot?

At 1:33 he speaks about the vaccination and politics. Have to agree it’s truly scary when your job or having a beer or seeing a baseball game or going to school or getting on a bus is dependent on government vaccine edicts.

Kevin, where are the studies showing the issues with the vaccines. 4,000 deaths due to and within a few days of the shot in the U.S. ??

Scary when government edicts regarding a vaccination, not even other immunity!, determines if you have a job, have a beer at a saloon, see a baseball game, ride a bus, or even attend school.

Kevin, what is data regarding poor vaccinations outcomes? 4,000 deaths in the U.S. ??

The origin of Covid is tremendously important IMHO because it determines next steps in preventing another pandemic. If COVID was from a wet market…so that’s what we need to control. If COVID was engineered that is much more problematic. Even if the US halts funding for gain of function research, how will you make China follow suit? Is Chinese gain of function research sort of like Chernobyl with nuclear power? Even after we deal with Fauci and company sending our tax dollars over there – that we can stop – we have to deal with research we can’t really stop.
