IRS Migration Data

By March 21, 2026Commentary1 min read

The IRS has released domestic state-to-state migration data for the year from 2022 to 2023.  The data reflects the number of individuals moving from a state and to a state and the amount of income those individuals reported.  You can total up the outgoing and incoming numbers to get the net total.  Minnesota, as you might imagine, is a loser.  California, New York, Illinois and Massachusetts led the list of losers, but Minnesota more than pulls its weight on a per capita basis, as it is much smaller than those states.  We have one of the worst per capita net loses in taxable income in the entire country.  Florida, Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina were big gainers.  You can draw your own conclusions as to why certain states are losers and some gainers, maybe it has something to do with politics?  Much more data available here.  (VWYF)
