Student Achievement in the US

By September 20, 2025Commentary2 min read

I have made this point multiple times; China is turning out engineers by the hundreds of thousands and leads the US and every other country in just about every scientific category.  The public schools, and a number of private schools, in most states are more interested in ideological indoctrination, driven by teachers’ unions and staff’s desire to create as many Dem voters as possible.  The consequence has been an immense decline in student learning and achievement, except in a few Southern and Western states.   Under the rule of Dayton and Walz, Minnesota has experienced rapid decreases in student trest scores in both math and reading, to below those in Mississippi, Florida and other formerly lagging states.

The most recent release of National test scores indicates that the decline continues.  Even far-left broadcaster NPR has to take notice.  Eighth grade science scores decreased by 4 points and 12th graders math and reading scores by 3 points since 2019.  The reading scores are a full ten points lower than in 1992.  Students are missing school more frequently as well.  And of course, the poorest students and minorities had the biggest declines, because Democrats care so much about them.  NPR tries to somehow blame this on the Trump administration, as you would expect, but the difference between the Southern states and Dem-run ones tells you all you need to know.   (NPR Article)

I just referenced the NPR article for fun, so you see why that organization appropriately was deprived of federal funding.  You can read the actual report here.  (NAEP Report)   There you will learn that only 31% of 8th graders were proficient in science.  Only 22% of 12th graders were math proficient, only 35% were reading proficient.  You can see all the state results as well.   We are doomed if we don’t get much more aggressive about focusing our students on what actually helps make life better for all Americans.

Is the U.S. student population today comparable in race, ethnicity, and country of origin to that of 1992 such that a comparison is statistically valid?
