Musk Departs, Sadly

By May 29, 2025Commentary2 min read

Faster than my prediction of by the end of the summer, Elon Musk is departing any official role at “DOGE”.  I thought he would leave because he would become an albatross around Trump’s neck.  He did become a lightening rod that Democrats have attacked vociferously.  But the real reasons he is leaving are that his companies are struggling without his basically full-time involvement and because of his political activities, and he must be incredibly frustrated.  While I think he should have been lower key, what Musk and his team were and are doing is absolutely critical.  We have to cut spending.  There is an immense amount of fraud and waste.  Waste meaning spending government money on non-essential projects and handing out money to people who are just slackers.  Musk overstated what could be done to limit spending without fundamental reform to entitlement programs but he also identified enormous amounts of inefficiency and waste.  Congress of course has ignored all that and just kept spending and increasing the deficit.  So if I were Musk I would also feel like I had better things to do with my time.  It is the country’s loss.

It was predictable that Musk would be leaving either today or tomorrow. As a “special government employee” his tenure was limited to 130 calendar days. And he has previously said that he would stick to that.

He put a good team in place. I hope they will carry on the important work Musk started.

yeah, he could have been renewed I believe, and I assume he didn’t want to be, and who can blame him. All that work and Congress just jacks spending way up
