The Anti-Strib, April 12, 13 & 14

By April 14, 2025Commentary2 min read

Same old, same old.  Tariffs are bad.  Now since I generally agree with that, I am not going to complain too much, but it is interesting how much coverage the Strib devotes to the issue, all in a negative light.  The Minnesota GOP is fighting a far-right group.  If you read the Strib regularly, you know it thinks all Republicans are far-right and all Dems are moderates, so this is a pretty funny story from that perspective.  The Naval Academy removed some books from its library.  No suggestion that maybe the original librarians were intentionally excluding stuff that didn’t promote woke ideology.  Some federal agencies are being told to stop wasting time and money on climate change.  Long overdue.

DOGE fall short of budget goal, but then stories about how all the terrible cuts are hurting addiction and mental health programs and arts groups.  Okay, either we are or we aren’t cutting funding.  I have long said that if you don’t touch entitlements, you aren’t going to make a real dent in the deficit.  But there is also a lot of wasted spending, pointless agencies, etc. and every dollar saved is good from the taxpayers perspective.  And no government should spend any money or “arts” programs.  If the public won’t spend enough to keep them in business, why should taxpayers subsidize something that isn’t appealing to people.  The real question, never addressed by the Strib, is what should government be spending money on and how do we ensure it isn’t wasted.
