Heart Disease and Young People

By February 25, 2025Commentary2 min read

Some people claimed that the CV-19 vax was causing all kinds of heart issues for younger adults, including deaths.  One of the claims that got the most attention was that young athletes were dying of sudden heart attacks.  In addition, there were concerns that CV-19 itself could prompt such events.  I posted a few months ago on one study showing no change in the rate of such heart attacks.  Intensive athletic activities have always been a risk for exposing congenital heart issues that lead to disease or death.  Another study comes to the same conclusion.  The three years pre-epidemic were compared with the first three years of the epidemic.  Over the entire period, 387 heart attacks, some survived and some resulting in death, were identified among young athletes.  86% were in males.  Half resulted in death.  203 occurred in the three years before the epidemic and 184 in the three years during the epidemic.  52% resulted in death in the pre-epidemic period and 46% during the epidemic.  73% of the deaths had a specific cause identified .  Only 3 were due to myocarditis pre-epidemic and 4 druing the epidemic.   (JAMA Article)

Similarly, while heart disease may be occurring more widely in young adults, if it is the most likely reason is ongoing obesity and poor health behaviors among this group.  Another study looks at the general rates of heart attacks outside a hospital in apparently healthy adults age 40 or under.  The death rates from these events is quite high.  60% die before getting to the hospital, and only about 10% to 15% survive hospitalization.  55% to 70% have an cardiac issue identified that led to the heart attack, such as an arrhythmia, clogged arteries or congenital issue.  Over half had risk factors like hypertension or diabetes.  Some of these heart attack events were related to substance abuse. There was no suggestion in the article that either CV-19 or vaccines had any impact on the rates of these events.   (JAMA Article)
